Wrapping up the latest Hellions arc to make sure we're done for the Hellfire Gala!

Oh, by the way... did you know there's something called the Hellfire Gala headed our way?  Betcha didn't... they hardly ever mention it!

Here, the Hellions fight their way from the Mindscape and we progress Sinister's story perhaps one step closer to the Chimeras!  All that, and I heap a creepy amount of praise on our Hellions creative team!

Plus: Great Mailbag (including a "day and date" missive), and a report on the "Week in X" both on Marvel Unlimited and on store shelves!

In today's x-tra size milestone episode, we find out what Arcade and that elf from the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special had in common.  Hint: It has to do with teeth!

Also: Our titular Hellions face off against their deepest, darkest desires... and maybe grind up on a robot manikin or two.  I promise this is a book worth reading... and, hopefully an episode worth hearing.

All that and some great and thought-provoking listener mail!

No A.I. may be allowed to flourish...

Today's issue of Hellions is quite a challenging one, as it gives us a lot to chew on regarding morality, mortality... and probably a few other "-alities" to boot.  Another wonderful chapter of this wonderful book.  If you're not reading Hellions... you should be!

Also - Great Mailbag... and a missive that actually inspired a brand-new segment for the show, wherein I take a look at the most recent Sales Charts (October, 2020).  We'll keep doing this as new sales/shipping data becomes available!  Lemme know what you think!

Dawn of X, Wave Two rolls on with the introduction of a very bizarre book, indeed - it's Hellions!

Today we're talking about a surprisingly x-cellent issue of X-Force!  Not only that - it's a one-and-done, that raises the stakes and advances our overarching plot!  Now, that doesn't feel like a "current year" book, does it?

In X-Force #6, our point-of-view character is Hank McCoy... who is going to do some pretty bad things in the interests of the greater good.  We establish a new potentially Omega-Level threat in Nanoflorites - and get another formerly unwilling nation to sign on the dotted line for some Krakoan Magic Meds!

Also: Great listener mail, discussing the "silent" Giant-Size issue, as well as some more kind words about our milestone 50th Episode!  It's a great time as always, I do so hope you'll join us!

Super busy day/weekend of writing papers... let's discuss a recent Super book.

--

Picking up where we left off Lois, Jon, and Wonder Woman watch the Superman/Doomsday battle from the Justice League Satellite.  They watch while Doomsday makes short work of Mr. Oz's geek brigade... They're not the only ones watching, however, as we see Mr. Oz himself observing as well.

Superman and Doomsday continue to battle until Superman breaks away and plays a bit of cat and mouse with his monstrous foe.  Jon is concerned that his Pop's running away, but Wonder Woman assures him he's actually luring Doomsday somewhere.  Seems we're getting that "Hey, is Superman running away?" thing a lot these days, no?

Doomsday catches up, and Superman proceeds to throw him halfway across the world... to a specific location... where a special secret Fortress of Solitude is hidden.  Inside the Fortress, Doomsday is blasted with rays... but it's not enough.

At the satellite, Lois and Jon plead with Diana to return to Earth and help her husband.  They assure her that the Smiths will be just fine while she's away.  Too bad Lois doesn't have her mecha-Batman costume, right?

Wonder Woman begrudgingly goes Earthbound, and joins the fight.  She is able to distract Doomsday long enough for Superman to give him a blast of pure "Go to the Phantom Zone" rays.  Job well done, they fist-bump (?) and breathe in a sigh of relief.

Back in Metropolis, Super-Lex and Normal-Kent are still playing damage control.  Superman arrives on the scene and asks Luthor for a moment of his time to chat.  They have a... pretty uncomfortable, but not totally contentious talk... and at least for now, part peacefully.

Superman heads up to the satellite and rejoins his family.  They have an emotional reunion, while Jon asks if they can ever visit the Phantom Zone... cuz it sounds like a cool place.  Superman's reply is simply, "Never".  Ha!  The story ends with Mr. Oz walking away from his observation deck, and over to... the intercepted Doomsday!

--

We wrap up our first post-Rebirth story arc in a more or less satisfactory way.

This is pretty much the standard wrap-up issue and I really enjoyed it.  I've harped at length my distaste for the formulaic done-in-six story structure DC (and Marvel) has been using for quite some time now, but taking this issue on it's own as a concluding chapter, it was very good.

The Clark Kent mystery is still interesting... as is the semi-heroic Lex Luthor.  Really looking forward to what's to come... hopefully as the Rebirth hoopla dies down we can just start telling some one-off's again to flesh out the cast... outside of the Kent-White-Smith family.

Not a whole lot more to say that I already haven't.  I always enjoy reading a Dan Jurgens story, and Steven Segovia's art is... as usual, top notch.  Regardless of how much I dug this, I am honestly quite glad our opening story is now behind us.

While I'm running short on things to say might as well share a theory I've got... and it could be/probably is completely off base... figure I may as well share it anyway.  This story arc started with Doomsday's arrival... and he was in his pre-breakout duds from the Death of Superman/Superman: The Man of Steel #18 era.  Over in the Titans book, it's been mentioned that Wally and Linda shouldn't meet each other for a few years... I gotta wonder if somehow the universe has been shifted in time to... I dunno, around the time that Watchmen came out?  Like, we've got the contemporary heroes... just during the post-Crisis era... but like, not 1986... it's still "today".  No?  Ehh, who knows?

Action Comics #961 (October, 2016)

Writer - Dan Jurgens

Inker - Art Thibert
Letterer - Rob Leigh
Colorist - Arif Prianto

I realized I've covered all of the Rebirth issues of Superman (vol.4) and have yet to write anything about his other book!  Let's fix that.

--

We open in Metropolis with Super Lex taking care of business in the wake of Superman and Wonder Woman heading out.  While he stabilizes a building, a familiar face pops into frame... Clark Kent.  Luthor and Kent share some pleasantries, all the while Clark holds fast that he is not Superman.  During the fracas, the blue blur of Superwoman makes an appearance... which makes our green-cloaked observer rather curious.

Meanwhile, upstate Doomsday and Wonder Woman are going at it.  Diana gets knocked away, and the real steel deal "tags in" while Lois and Jon attend to the fallen Amazon.  Superman and Doomsday exchange blows for awhile, and again... we see our enigmatic observer.  He commands the "gate" be prepared, and declares that "now is the time".

Wonder Woman shakes the cobwebs and hops back into the melee, lassoing Doomsday with the golden perfect.  She ain't getting much truth outta the beast, in fact, he slips out of his bindings and begins choking Superman out with the gilded cord... that is, until young Jon unleashes a blast of heat vision into Doomsday's ugly mug.

As one would imagine, Doomsday doesn't react well to this.  He turns his attention to Supes Sr. and begins walking toward the tot.  Not a smart move, big guy... turning your back on Superman.  He's knocked into next week by our man, and in the few moments he just bought, he asks Wonder Woman to take his family to safety.  He claims that nowhere on Earth will be safe... guess somebody's getting a satellite ride...

After the tear-filled goodbyes among the Whites, we pop back in on our observer.  He is standing with a figure in a full face mask.  Apparently the "gate" is ready... and they're currently awaiting orders.

Superman and Doomsday continue their battle while Lois and Jon arrive on the Justice League satellite with Wonder Woman.  The fight continues until a group of men in full face mask arrive on the scene and proceed to relentlessly blast Doomsday with laser beams!

--

Just a few months back I would have never figured I'd be writing about a contemporary release that was numbered in the nine-hundreds.  Outside of some "wacky" "special" Deadpool and Wolverine comics, nothing even came close to these kinds of numbers.  Boy am I happy to have this title... and this character back!

It really feels like coming home again... even if that home is sporting an unfamiliar shade of paint.  This is probably not the best issue to start reviewing this title, as it's a part five.  What's more, and I said this in my Superman vol. 4 review a week or so back... it feels like a "part five".  I'm really hoping that after the first "for the trade" storyline, we maybe shake things up a bit.  Make things a bit less formulaic.  Maybe return to a time when subplots grew organically over long periods of time... rather than fitting everything into the six-parter format.

The writing and art are great!  This book just oozes of quality.  You can tell just by looking at it, that it's a book earmarked to "matter".  Even the coloring gives it an odd "event" look to it... which probably doesn't make any sense... it's just the impression it gives me.  Story wise, it feels as though all the pieces are starting to come together, and we'll have some of our questions answered pretty quick.

Like I said with Superman vol. 4, I am looking forward to some solo-Superman stories.  Not that I don't like the family, because I do... I just want to see a Superman-on-his-own story again... featuring this Superman.  I love that he's got a family, because to me Superman was never somebody I wanted to be, he was someone I could look to for protection.  He was always a fatherly presence to me.  I didn't need him to be a young swingin' single to "relate" to him.  Even with that said, I'm really hoping to see some stories that don't revolve around the "Smiths".  Maybe I'm just impatient... to be fair, I've never claimed to be anything but!

Overall... this is still the book that's on the top of my "to read" pile on the weeks it comes out.  I find myself with very little in the way of free time to read many books for "entertainment" (ie. something I'm not planning on writing and/or ruminating about)... this book, however, always has my attention.  Jump aboard as it rolls on toward issue 1000... and, hopefully (though I'm not convinced) issue 1001 and beyond.

If you would have told the teenage Chris (otherwise known as Chris is on Earth 616) that at any point in his life he would consider Superman among his favorite characters, he'd have laughed in your face... then he would have adjusted his hypercolor t-shirt and probably would have quoted Bart Simpson.

I would have never even imagined that... what's more, if you would have told me that a Superman title would be my favorite book month in and month out, well I certainly wouldn't have believed that either... and yet, here we are.

The Superman books of late (with Superman: Lois & Clark topping the pile) have been a real surprise.  After many false-starts and inconsistent narratives, DC Comics appears to have found a winning formula for this family of titles... just in time for the re-whateverthey'recallingit that's on the rapidly approaching horizon.

I'm super pleased that the current creators are the ones that will come with us through the Rebirth Rubicon.  I am (not even cautiously) optimistic that the Superman books they have in store for us will maintain a high level of quality, and anxiously await experiencing the roll-out.

But, that's still several weeks out.  For now, let's discuss Superman: Lois & Clark #7.

--

We open on a Flashback, some several years ago.  Lois and Jon are returning home from the grocery, and are surprised when they find Clark inside in full celebration-mode over Lois' latest "Author X" book publication.

All the while, Jon is playing with his Superman and Flash action figures and is having trouble figuring out who would win in a race.  Lois picks Superman but Jon appears to come from the John Byrne school of super-powers... if speed is Flash's only power, then he's gotta be the fastest in the world.  Jon ultimately has Flash win, which I wish would have elicited at least a funny eyebrow cock from Clark.  Best part here, Jon's Superman action figure... it's got the trunks!

Back in the present, Lois and Jon are locked in a burning storage room.  Over the past few issues Intergang came to the realization that Lois White and Author X were one in the same.  Little did they know, when they locked the pair inside that one of them would be impervious to fire damage.  Jon breaks them out, and with Intergang hot on their heels, they flee the scene.

Meanwhile, Clark is over on the Roosevelt Bridge dealing with the television-manufactured threat of Blackrock.  The two tussle, until Clark finds out this was all a television publicity stunt.  He then spikes the poor fool into the ground, and destroys all of the film evidence (good thing they weren't going live!) before heading toward his wife and son.

Intergang has caught up with Lois and Jon, and plan to take them out firing squad style.  Luckily, Clark blurs by in the nick of time and hauls his family to safety.

When they arrive at home, Lois and Clark realize the jig is up... they gotta come clean to Jon.  They do their best to explain their former home on the pre-Flashpoint (though they don't call it that) Earth, and Jon seems to come around.  He was initially quite upset that they kept such a massive secret from him, but seemed to process the information pretty well, even to the point of embracing his father being a superhero.  Jonathan and Martha would be proud.  Clark gets an odd feeling, and has a strange vision of violence.  He knows he is needed, and so he takes off... leaving his proud wife and son safely behind.

Throughout the issue there were a couple of vignettes of a woman called Hyathis who is in search of the Oblivion Stone.  She manages to come into possession of half of it... however, not the second.  For that one is currently being kept at Clark's makeshift Fortress of Solitude.

Man I love this series.  If I didn't know for a fact that this Superman will be continuing on post-Rebirth I'd be bumming pretty hard right now.  It was the announcement of this title back in the late-summer of 2015 that brought me back to DC Comics in a major way.  I felt as though this book was something of an olive-branch to older and lapsed fans.  While I still collected and read DC Comics, I didn't really consider myself a full-blown "DC Guy".  Lois & Clark (and Titans Hunt) was DC's mea culpa, and for me... it worked.  I'm back.

This was yet another incredible issue of this amazing series.  There's so much heart in this book, that I cannot help but smile as I read it.  As cliche as it may sound, this is my Superman.  Each and every month Dan Jurgens proves that he is the Superman creator of my generation, and I am incredibly thankful he will be continuing on in the legacy-numbered (yeah, it matters) Action Comics post-Rebirth.

I suppose if I had to nit-pick anything, it's that I really have very little interest in the Oblivion Stone subplot that has been weaved through this series since the start.  I am far more interested in the "White" family dynamic.  I feel like I'm seeing an old friend that I hadn't seen in many years.  All I want to do is find out what he's been up to... the Oblivion Stone story, while probably necessary, feels like a distraction from the real "meat and potatoes" of this series.

The art continues to be great in this series.  Despite the abundance of illustrators here, I felt it flowed very nicely.  I like Superman as a Dad... because, and I may be projecting here... Superman, to me, was (and is) the perfect Dad.  Seeing him actually playing that role, with a son he adores, almost brings a tear to my eye.  It's strange when you can actually be happy for a fictional character... but, (as I say far too often) here we are.  He's earned his happiness... and I am glad we have been given this opportunity to experience it.
